The inside of Roskilde Cathedral
The inside of Roskilde Cathedral
Today we took a train with our bikes out to Roskilde. We visited the cathedral there as well as the Viking museum, the nearby Boserup forest and the Ragnarock museum of Danish rock and roll.
The Viking museum has reconstructions of some ships dredged from the bottom of the local fjord. Lots of history.
Boserup Skov. Lovely biking - orange slugs, white snails, tiny frogs, fancy birds and LOGS.
Lots of unfenced fields of wheat or barley just outside of town.
Ragnarock rock museum. Glitzy.
There's a ramen and beer bar also near to where we're staying. The danger increases.
Today we did an eight-hour walking, boating and cycling tour of Copenhagen. All very overwhelming with loads of amazing architecture, culture and history. I'll limit the photos.
A bit of a slower day today. Started with traditional Danish smørrebrød for breakfast and explored a dedicated cycling green path on the way for coffee and then on to the Carlsberg brewery for a tour and tasting. Quite an interesting history and set up with the business going to a foundation after the death of the guy who started it.
From there we went to the old meat packing district which, like New York's one, has become a fashionable area of eateries and other shops.
We grabbed some crispy Danish dark cracker stuff, olives and blue cheese on the way home for dinner.
The photo above is from the Carlsberg museum's collection of unopened beer bottles. The largest in the world we are told.
Damian in John's Hotdogs. Pretty good!
This style of paint is a very Copenhagen thing. It's made using traditional methods and you see it a lot on old navy barracks that have now been converted into houses. It varies from yellow to red but this orange is the most common.
A visit to the design museum today. Got to love Danish design.
Nyhavn (new harbour, which is actually pretty old now).
Today we took a train and bus north to Helsingør and visited Kronborg castle. It's very close to Sweden and hence the location of a lot of battles.
It's also the scene of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Alas, poor Yorick.
They had a roaming play of Hamlet throughout the castle while we were here. We followed the various actors around, occasionally losing them. It was really well done and an excellent way to watch a play.
Polonius is behind the curtain on the right and about to get stab-ed.
Sally and shiny boy in Helsingør.
